THE FAMILY FOUNDER

and

First Generation Descendants

          1.  Johann Georg ZUFELT, the founder of the American Zufelt/Shufelt families was born at Hasselbach, Germany, in 1659, the son of Georg Zophel and Anna Catharina Walden. As "Johann Georg Zofelt from Hasselback," November 18, 1701, he married Anna Catharina Zaam (Sahm) from Mademühlen. The baptism of Anna Catharina, the daughter of Johann Jost Sahm and wife Catharina, April 28, 1677, with Anna Catharin—daughter of Paulus Thomae at Mademühlen—sponsoring, was recorded in the Driedorf church books. It has been discovered that Johann Georg and Anna Catharina had at least four children born in Germany and five in Colonial America. He and his family left Germany and they were among the 6th party of Palatine emigrants arriving in Rotterdam in 1709. They sailed from Holland to England, probably in 1709, and later sailed to Colonial America in 1710. The Rotterdam Lists show a "Gorg Zufungs" along with his wife, and three children, in the sixth party of Palatines in Holland in 1709. The three children accounted for on the Rotterdam lists were probably, Georg Adam, Anna Barbara, and Johan Wilhelm. Other records show that Anna Elisabetha died at the age of 2 weeks while still in Germany (September 3, 1706).

Johann Georg Zufeld made his first appearance on the Hunter Lists, July 4, 1710 with two persons over 10 years of age and three under the age of 10. This accounting matches that of the Rotterdam Lists, above. From that point forward the accounting becomes a little murky. The family was recorded with three persons over 10 and three under 10 on March 25, 1711; three over 10 and two under 10 on, June 24, 1711; three over 10 and one under 10 on September, 29, 1711; and three persons over 10 and two under 10, September 13, 1712.<

"Gorg Zuvelt" was among those naturalized at Kingston, September 8 and 9, 1715. The Simmendinger Register lists "Georg Zufeiten" with his wife and children at Wormsdorff around 1716/17. In the Dutchess County Tax Lists a "Jureie Toefelt" made his initial appearance on North Ward rolls in the 1717/1718 period and continued to be listed until June 1756. The "Widow Shovelt" was recorded in the period June 1757 through February 1759.

The children Johann Georg and Anna Catharina Sahm born in Germany were:

          2. Georg Adam ZUFELT: born April 18, 1702.

          3. Anna Barbara ZUFELT: born April 12, 1704.

          4. Anna Elisabetha ZUFELT: born August 22, 1706.

          5. Johann Wilhelm ZUFELT: born September 1, 1707.

Children born in the Hudson Valley Palatine settlements were:

          6. Anna Sibylla ZUFELT: born August 9, 1712 (Twin).

          7. Anna Regina ZUFELT: born August 9, 1712 (Twin).

          8. Anna Maria ZUFELT: born September 18, 1714.

          9. Anna Margaretha ZUFELT: born July 23, 1716.

          10. Catharina ZUFELT: born July 29, 1722.

          2.  Georg Adam, ZUFELT, the son of Johann Georg Zufelt (1) and Anna Catharina Zaam, was born April 18, 1702. Records of the Allendorf Church list sponsors at his baptism as Johann Georg Haffener, Adam Schnee, and Anna—wife of Thőnges Vőlpel, all from Hasselbach. At a very young age he left Germany with his parents and sailed from Rotterdam to England and later to the Palatine settlement in New York, arriving there in 1710. According to the records of West Camp Lutheran Church, a Jurg Adam Zufeld was confirmed Easter Sunday, 1714, at Queensberg. Gorg Adam Zuvelt was among those naturalized along with his father at Kingston, September 8 and 9, 1715. Dutchess County Tax Lists show that "Jurrian Adam Toofelt" made his first appearance on tax rolls in 1725 and continued to be enrolled, sometimes as Adam Zoefelt/Toefelt, until 1778. The Livingston Debt Lists show that "Jurry Adam Soeffelt" was a Palatine Debtor in 1747. It is possible that he was the individual listed as a freeholder of Dutchess County in 1740 under the name of "Jury Adam Soefelt."

A 1755 census of negro slaves in Rhinebeck, Dutchess County, includes a listing for a "George Adam Toevelt" who owned one female slave "Dien" and a "George Toevelt" who also owned one female slave "Febe".

A Jury Adam Shufelt appears among those of Dutchess County who refused to sign the General Association. A detailed description of George Adam's conduct during the Revolutionary War is found in a biography of George Adam's great-great-grreat-grandsons—John L. (1736) and Norman S. (1737), in Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois, 1914, and quoted below.

Church records indicate that Georg Adam first married Elisabetha Krans or Kranz, the daughter of Johan Henrich Krantz, born about 1702 in Germany. The name of her mother, who apparently died prior to the departure from Germany or during the journey, has not been determined. Her father makes his first appearance on the Hunter Subsistence Lists, July 1, 1710, with one person over the age of 10 and two under 10 — probably Elisabetha and her brother Michael. Georg Adam and Elisabetha Kranz had:

          11. Johann Georg ZUFELT.

          12. Henrich "Hendrik" ZUFELT: baptized March 12, 1727.

          13. Catharina ZUFELT: baptized May 6, 1729.

          14. Anatje "Anna" ZUFELT: baptized in 1731.

          15. Elisabetha ZUFELT.

          16. Johannes ZUFELT.

Georg Adam, then married Anna Catharina Reisdorff, the daughter of Johannes Reisdorff and Anna Margaretha Coert. They had:

          17. Philipp ZUFELT: baptized April 15, 1740.

          18. Maria Margaretha "Margriet" ZUFELT: baptized January 24, 1742.

          19. Anna Barbara ZUFELT: baptized Febuary 5, 1744.

          20. Anna Maria ZUFELT: baptized March 30, 1746.

          21. Magdalena "Lena" ZUFELT: born August 9, 1750.

          22. Petrus ZUFELT: born April 28, 1753.

          23. Adam ZUFELT: baptized January 18, 1756.

          24. Georg ZUFELT: born October 25, 1761.

          25. Catharina ZUFELT.

          26. Henrich ZUFELT.

          3.      Anna Barbara ZUFELT, the daughter of Johann Georg Zufelt (1) and Anna Catharina Zaam, was born April 12, 1704. Baptismal records of the Allendorf Church list the sponsors at the baptism as Christ Krämer from Üdersbach (Odersbach?), Johannes Theiss of Hasselbach—son of the cowherd there, Anna Dorothea—daughter of Jost Kurtz, and Anna Barbara from Neuműhlen. At a young age she left Germany with her parents and sailed from Rotterdam to England and later to the Palatine settlement in New York, arriving there in 1710.

          4.      Anna Elisabetha ZUFELT, the daughter of Johann Georg Zufelt (1) and Anna Catharina Zaam, was born August 22, 1706. Baptismal records of the Allendorf Church list the sponsors at the baptism as Anna Elisab.—wife of Thőnges Krämer, Anna Elis.—daughter of the late Georg Zovelt, and Joh. Philips—son of Jost Kurtz, all at Hasselbach. She died after only two weeks, September 3, 1706.

          5.      Johann Wilhelm, ZUFELT, the son of Johann Georg Zufelt (1) and Anna Catharina Zaam, was born September 1, 1707. Records of the Allendorf Church list sponsors at the baptism as Wilhelm Schrőder, Johannes Sauer, Catharina—wife of Jost Sauer, and Marg. Cath.—wife of Jost Kurtz. Dutchess County Tax Lists include a "Johan William Souffelt" on the North Ward roll in 1729; he then disappears from Dutchess County until his reappearance on North Ward rolls in 1739/40. Hank Jones, in The Palatine Families of New York, suggests, and this compiler agrees, that the marriage entries of his sons Adam and Johannes indicate that during the period 1730—1738, Johann Wilhelm and his family resided in the Minisink region of Orange County. Johann Wilhelm married Anna Maria Stahl.

Anna Maria Stahl was the daughter of Johann Stahl and his wife Anna Ursula, born October 31, 1711, and baptized at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at West Camp, Town of Saugerties, Ulster County, New York, November 12, 1711. Sponsors at the baptism were "Johann Peter Oberbach; Anna Maria, daughter of Wilhelm Kuster; and Anna Elisabeth Mullerin." The baptismal record lists the parents of the child as "Johann Stahl and Anna Ursula," and includes the comment that the "Baptism occurred in the upper German Colonies."

          27. Georg ZUFELT: baptized February 15, 1730.

          28. Johannes ZUFELT: born about 1733.

          29. Adam ZUFELT: born about 1735.

          30. Catharina ZUFELT: baptized December 2, 1739.

          31. Anna Elisabetha ZUFELT: baptized March 2, 1742.

          32. Johann Michael ZUFELT: baptized March 18, 1744.

          33. Anna ZUFELT: baptized February 5, 1746.

          34. Jacob ZUFELT: born April 11, 1748.

          35. Petrus "Peter" ZUFELT: born August 28, 1750.

          6.      Anna Sibylla ZUFELT, the daughter of Johann Georg Zufelt (1) and Anna Catharina Zaam and a twin of Anna Regina below, was born August 9, 1712 in West Camp. Sometimes referred to as Sophia, baptismal records of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, West Camp, show her to have been born during August, 1712, and baptized August 9, 1712, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at the West Camp Town of Saugerties, Ulster County, New York. This same record lists the parents as "Jorg Zufeld and Anna Catharina," the sponsors as "Henrich Widerwachs and wife," and include a note that the "Baptism occurred in the upper German Colonies, twin." A translation of the Kocherthal records of the West Camp Lutheran Church includes: "Record of children who were baptized by me, Joshua Kocherthal, the first pastor of the Germans of New York . . . Aug. 9th: Anna Sibylla and Anna Regina, twins, born Aug. 9th, children of Jorg and Anna Catharina Zufeld; sponsors: Henrich Widerwachs and his wife, Henrich Lorentz and his wife."

Records of the New York City Lutheran Church show that, as "Sophia Suffelt", she and her sister "Anna Maria Suffelt" were confirmed at Beekman's Mills, June 22, 1731. She married Johannes Lammert/Lamed, the son of Johanes Lamet and Elisabetha (Vogel?), born about 1712. The records of Loonenberg Lutheran Church show that Hannes Lahmer was confirmed at "Rynbeck", January 12, 1732, at the age of 20, and married Anna Sibylla Zufelt.

Johannes Lamet (the father) made his first appearance on the Hunter Lists July 1, 1710 with 2 persons over 10 years of age in the household. He was then recorded with 3 persons over the age of 10 on December 24, 1711, and then again with 2 persons over the age of 10, June, 24 1712. Kingston Naturalizations show that John Lamert was among those naturalized September 8 and 9, 1715. The Simmendinger Register shows Johannes Lamert with his wife and children at Beckmansland about 1716/7. Dutchess County Tax Lists include Hans Lambert in the North Ward and then Rhinebeck from 1717/18 to 1778. Dutchess County Supervisor's Records list him as an "overseer of ye King's Highway" in the North Ward in 1725, and in 1730 he was a "surveyor of ye fences in the North Ward." A History of Rhinebeck (p. 50), by Edward M. Smith, shows Johannes Lambert had one slave in Rhinebeck in 1755. He married Elisabetha (Vogel?). They had one son, Johannes who married Anna Sibylla Zufelt.

Johannes Lamert and Anna Sibylla Zufelt had at least four children:

          36. Johannes LAMERT: baptized April 15, 1740.

          37. Georg LAMERT: baptized October 31, 1742.

          38. Johann Adam LAMERT: baptized February 9, 1746.

          39. Anna Maria LAMERT: born May 10, 1748.

          7.      Anna Regina ZUFELT, the daughter of Johann Georg Zufelt (1) and Anna Catharina Zaam and a twin of Anna Sibylla above. Baptismal records of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, West Camp, show her to have been born during August, 1712, and baptized August 9, 1712, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in the West Camp Town of Saugerties, Ulster County, New York. This same record lists the parents as "Jorg Zufeld and Anna Catharina," the sponsors as "Henrich Lorentz and wife," and include a note that the "Baptism occurred in the upper German Colonies, twin." A translation of the Kocherthal records of the West Camp Lutheran Church includes: "Record of children who were baptized by me, Joshua Kocherthal, the first pastor of the Germans of New York... Aug. 9th: Anna Sibylla and Anna Regina, twins, born Aug. 9th, children of Jorg and Anna Catharina Zufeld; sponsors: Henrich Widerwachs and his wife, Henrich Lorentz and his wife." The fact that her twin sister, Sophia, and a younger sister, Anna Maria, were confirmed at Beekman's Mills, June 22, 1731, and she wasn't, leads one to conclude that Anna Regina died prior to 1731.

          8.       Anna Maria ZUFELT, the daughter of Johann Georg Zufelt (1) and Anna Catharina Zaam, was born in West Camp, Ulster County, New York, September 18, 1714, and baptized at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Town of Saugerties, October 21, 1714. The baptismal record lists her parents as "Jerg Zufeld and Anna Catharina" and the sponsors "Peter Dippel and Anna Maria Zipperlin." It also includes the note that the "Baptism occurred in the upper German Colonies." The records of baptisms by the Reverend Joshua Kocherthal include "Oct. 21st: Anna Maria, born Sept. 18th:, child of Jerg and Anna Catharina Zufeld; sponsors: Peter Dippel and Anna Maria Zipperlin." Records of the New York City Lutheran Church show that she (Anna Maria) and her sister Sophia Suffelt were confirmed at Beekman's Mills, June 22, 1731.

Anna Maria's baptism, and others of the period were probably performed by the Reverand Joshua Kochertha during his travels throughout the area and not actually at the church where they were recorded.

          9.       Anna Margaretha ZUFELT, daughter of Johann Georg Zufelt (1) and Anna Catharina Zaam, was born in West Camp, July 23, 1716, and baptized at Schoharie July 29, 1716. Baptismal records of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in West Camp, Town of Saugerties, Ulster County, New York, list her parents as "Jerg Zufeld and Anna Catharina" and sponsors at the baptism as "Bernhard Noll and Anna Margretha Reisdorstin." The record also notes that she was "Baptised at Schoharie." The records of baptisms by the Reverend Joshua Kocherthal include: "July 29th: Anna Margretha, born July 23d, child of Jerg and Anna Catharina Zufeld; sponsors: Bernhard Noll, Anna Margretha Reisdorst." The records of Loonenburg Lutheran Church at Rhinebeck show that a "Margreta Suffelt" was confirmed January 12, 1732, at the age of 16 years.

She married Friederich Beringer/Berringer, the son of Conrad Beringer and Anna Elizabetha Stahl. The Dutchess County Tax Lists show Friederich appearing in Rhinebeck beginning in 1738/9. Friederich Beringer and Anna Margaretha Shufelt had:

          40. Conrad BERRINGER: baptized October 17, 1736.

          41. Hans Georg BERRINGER: baptized May 11, 1738.

          42. Zacharias BERRINGER: baptized March 9, 1740.

          43. Catharina BERRINGER:

          44. Elisabetha BERRINGER: baptized September 16, 1744.

          45. Jacob BERRINGER: baptized October 12, 1746.

          46. Johannes BERRINGER: born October 6, 1748.

          47. David BERRINGER: baptized December 25, 1750.

          48. Philip BERRINGER: baptized April 24, 1753.

          49. Anna Maria BERRINGER: baptized December 7, 1755.

          50. Christina BERRINGER: baptized August 27, 1758.

          10.  Catharina ZUFELT, the daughter of Johann Georg Zufelt (1) and Anna Catharina Zaam, was baptized July 29, 1722 at the Reformed Dutch Church of Kingston, Ulster County, New York. The Kingston baptimsal records list her parents as "Jury Soevelt and Catrina Zaam" and the sponsers as "Ananias Tiel and Reginne Hendriks."
